High Glanau Manor is an important Arts and Crafts house set in 12 acres of gardens designed in 1922 by H. Avray Tipping. Tipping was the Architectural Editor of Country Life magazine from 1907 until his death in 1933. Original features, once lost, have been lovingly restored by the current owners: Helena and Hilary Gerrish. What was a rustic stone tank set into the wall with steps leading to a swimming pool, surrounded by concrete and lampposts, are now 100 ft long double herbaceous borders. These contrast with groves of rhododendrons and azaleas sweeping down over the steep stone path which leads down to the stream garden with its fernery, and primula beds along the waterside.  There are far reaching views over the Vale of Usk from impressive stone terraces

The garden is open to private groups, garden tours and garden societies from all over the world throughout May, June and July. We are open to the Public for the National Garden Scheme (which Avray Tipping helped to create) in May and for the Rare Plants Fair in June each year.

Edwardian Country Life – the Story of H. Avray Tipping by Helena Gerrish is published by Frances Lincoln, illustrated with photographs of Tipping’s own houses and gardens as well as his commissions for others, notably at Chequers, Dartington Hall and Wyndcliffe Court.
